Riley (18), from Tamworth NSW, is autistic and was unemployed for nine months since leaving school; when looking for work he had been finding the interview stage difficult due to the confronting setting and communication barriers.

Riley sometimes experiences depression, memory loss, withdrawals from social contact, displays inhibited behaviour and often becomes anxious when his routine is disrupted, thus, his Job Coach, Sarah, provided support and helped him prepare for interviews.

As a significant amount of time over the last year has been spent in lockdown, Sarah was unable to provide face-to-face support, however, was able to go through and practice the basic interview questions with Riley remotely via phone or video chat and advise him on the best way to present himself to a potential employer.

Sarah put together a resume for Riley to highlight his skills, abilities and interests and worked closely with atWork Australia Employer Engagement Consultant, Matt, for job referrals.

Riley’s father sent a text message to Sarah after an interview with Thomas Foods saying, “thank you Sarah, we are over the moon with the service, detail and politeness that you and the other staff at atWork Australia have shown to us. Let’s hope he gets the job.”

And thanks to the practice Riley was able to do with Sarah, he has now commenced full-time employment as a Meat Process Worker with Thomas Foods.

When Riley found out he had the job he was very excited. Riley said, “I am excited to be starting full-time employment and earning my own money.”

For Riley, employment gives him independence and the confidence to set goals and succeed in his career, from a young age.

Every year, atWork Australia helps thousands of clients like Riley expand their skills and qualifications to help them gain the right job with the right employer. Call us today on 1300 080 856 or enquire online to find out how we can help you meet your career goals.
