Linten, from Diamond Creek in Victoria, is a double amputee, a result of a severe burn to 50% of his body. Linten was determined to find work; he was eager, ready to work hard and contribute to his community, however, many employers were not willing to give Linten a chance.
After being unsuccessful in finding employment, Linten was recommended to Disability Employment Services provider, atWork Australia, where he was connected with Job Coach, Mark.
Mark saw Linten’s potential right away; he had the exact attitude many employers are looking for in a candidate. The obstacles he faced as a result of living with a physical disability, made him feel like he needed someone to advocate on his behalf to employers.
Through the support and mentorship Mark provided, Linten began to build the confidence he needed to start reaching his goals. Mark worked closely with colleague and Employer Engagement Consultant, Martina; both working tirelessly to support Linten on his search for employment. They worked together to identify his key skills, what relevant experience he had, and what his main interests are. Once a plan of action was made, Linten started applying for a range of jobs.
“Linten needed a little extra support to make sure his key skills, relevant experience and interests were highlighted in each application,” said Mark.
“It was important for me to find a good fit for Linten, so we advocated on his behalf with potential employers who we knew would benefit from his unique skills and strengths. We made sure those skills and strengths were highlighted, like his dedication, resilience and determination.”
Linten was offered an interview as a Warehouse Cleaner with a local employer and Mark supported him to prepare for the interview; helping him research the role and the company, along with conducting mock interviews, to ensure he was fully prepared.
This extra preparation helped Linten to thrive in his interview, landing him the role.
Since starting his new role in July 2022, Linten has gone from strength to strength, impressing his employers every step of the way.
Looking back on his journey to find employment, Linten highlighted the support Mark, and the whole atWork Australia team, gave him.
Linten said: “Mark was great. We tried numerous opportunities, and I had many knockbacks. Mark was as persistent as I was to get a job. I finally landed a position which I am very grateful for. atWork Australia have been a great help.”
Describing how proud he felt to be a part of Linten’s journey, Mark said: “Linten was a pleasure to work with, and he also has an infectious laugh! I was proud to have been a part of his journey, and I couldn’t be happier now that he’s settled into his new role. His employer is over the moon with his attitude and his work.”
