When Cassy came to atWork Australia, she had been experiencing an extended period of unemployment. Cassy lives with a learning disability and because of her health barriers, she had very low confidence and found it difficult to build positive relationships with people. In the past, Cassy felt that when employers found out about her health barriers, she was treated differently.
Despite having negative experiences in the past, Cassy was still determined to secure employment. To assist her on the employment journey, Cassy came to atWork Australia’s Gosnell’s, WA, office to get tailored support from the Disability Employment Services team.
When Cassy attended her initial appointment, she was introduced to her Job Coach, Katie. For Katie to provide the best support for Cassy, she wanted to work on building a strong relationship so Cassy would feel comfortable and excited about coming to each appointment. Over time, Katie and Cassy developed a great working relationship and Cassy began to look forward to her fortnightly appointment.
By consistently attending fortnightly appointments, Cassy’s confidence and belief in her ability continued to grow. Cassy and Katie started practicing mock interviews so Cassy could develop the skills to confidently communicate her skills and abilities to potential employers.
It wasn’t long until Cassy secured an interview. Cassy’s Job Coach, Katie, attended the interview with her to support her through the process. Unfortunately, Cassy was not successful in securing this position. However, the experience helped to build her confidence and when she secured another interview, she was comfortable to attend without the support of her Job Coach or Support Worker.
Cassy had a couple of setbacks from her first two interviews. Although, she took positive learnings from both experiences. With the support of atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement Consultant, Caroline, the team continued searching for opportunities for Cassy.
Due to Cassy’s persistence and determination, she soon secured a new position in the domestic cleaning industry. Cassy’s Job Coach, Katie, said, “I have enjoyed supporting Cassy on her journey. Her motivation and determination to find employment was truly inspiring.”
