Kunchok came to Australia as a refugee and has spent many years unemployed. Kunchok realised he needed to make some changes in his life and came to atWork Australia’s Workforce Australia office in Marrickville, NSW, to get tailored support on his employment journey.
When Kunchok came to atWork Australia, he was participating in a rehabilitation program, as he was overcoming alcohol addiction. Kunchok also had a language barrier, which made his job search more difficult, as English was not his first language. When Kunchok met his Job Coach, Bill, they began developing a plan for how atWork Australia could best support him on his employment journey.
First, Bill wanted to assist Kunchok to develop his communication skills, as this would not only increase his chances to find employment, but also allow him to better engage in the community. Bill referred Kunchok to an English course at MTC Marrickville.
While Kunchok was busy developing his communication skills, Bill began advocating on Kunchok’s behalf to local employers. Bill soon came across a suitable position for Kunchok and referred him to a cleaning position at a local school. Kunchok was very excited to learn he had secured this position and was grateful for Bill’s support to find the role.
Kunchok happily worked in his new position for a few weeks. However, in his travels he came across a brochure advertising a baker traineeship. Kunchok was interested in this new opportunity and was eager to discuss this with his Job Coach. On Kunchok’s behalf, Bill contacted the employer to discuss the application process. Together, Bill and Kunchok prepared and submitted a strong application. Kunchok was absolutely delighted when he heard the good news; he was successful in securing the position. Kunchok’s Job Coach, said, “Finding employment has improved Kunchok’s mentality, every day now he can go to work and earn an income. It has had a big impact on his life.”
atWork Australia continued to support Kunchok, providing funding to purchase work related clothing to ensure he was prepared to start his traineeship.
