When Peter came to atWork Australia he was in the process of recovering from a life changing injury. Peter has had a remarkable thirty-year career as a nurse. Although, due to a tragic incident in Peter’s life, he suffered an injury that resulted in him having a lower limb deficiency. Due to the seriousness of Peter’s injury, he has been forced out of the workforce for the past three years while he focused on his recovery and trying to rebuild his strength to stand for extended periods of time. The ongoing impact of this injury meant that Peter could not return to the job he loved. Unfortunately, his long career as a nurse had to come to an end.
At sixty-two years of age, and after enduring this life changing injury, no one would have blamed Peter if he did not want to return to work. However, Peter felt he could still contribute and voluntarily came to atWork Australia’s Eureka, Victoria, office to get tailored support from the Disability Employment Service team to return to work.
From the very first appointment when Peter met his Job Coach, Khala, he had a positive attitude and was fully committed to finding employment. Peter explained to Khala that his main goal was to continue building his strength and extend the period of time he could spend standing up. He was looking for employment that would support him to achieve that goal.
Khala began supporting Peter to develop new skills by helping him obtain his forklift licence and teaching him fundamental skills to use technology. Peter was very proactive when completing his job searches, constantly followed up on jobs he had applied for, as well as looking for new opportunities to further develop his skill set.
Due to Peter’s hard work and consistently chasing opportunities, he soon secured a position as a Delivery Driver.
