Disability Employment Services Client, David, achieves his goal of re-entering the workforce with the support of his family and the atWork Australia team in Macquarie Fields, NSW.
For the past five years, David (64) has been battling cancer, something that has taken a lot of his time and energy. As a result, he has spent the past two years out of work, but if he had it his way, he would be working.
Upon meeting with his Job Coach, Jermyn, the pair got to know each other. This was a great opportunity for Jermyn to get to know David’s interests, goals, and skills, both inside and outside of employment. It was within this appointment that Jermyn learnt of David’s diagnosis and how that effects his capability to work.
It was important for David to have a role that did not require any heavy lifting, but above all else, he wanted to be placed in a role that he enjoyed.
With all this information in mind, David and Jermyn began to create a tailored job plan to get him where he wants to be. This included supporting him through a Certificate III in Retail; mentoring him whilst also providing any financial support he might need on the way.
After completing his certificate in only three months, David was confident and more eager to work than ever, so the job hunt began. Jermyn and Employment Engagement Consultant, Janine, began looking for suitable roles for David in the local area. Within these searches, Janine came across a part-time position with McDonald’s and thought this would be perfect for David, so they applied.
He was later successful within the interview process and was ecstatic. Within this next phase of his journey, the Macquarie Fields team were able to financially support David to purchase all the clothing he needed.
David’s journey has been a roller coaster but what has been stable in his life is the support that he has at home, and with atWork Australia. With assistance, David was able to gain qualifications in an area he wanted to work in.
David is proud of all he has achieved within recent months; from completing his studies, regaining his confidence to gaining employment in an industry he loves.
