Joel lives in Denmark, WA, a small regional town in the Great Southern Wheatbelt. When Joel came to atWork Australia to get support from the Workforce Australia team, he had been unemployed for more than a year. Joel was studying at university, although, he still needed to be looking for work to meet his monthly requirements. Joel does not have his driver’s licence and due to a knee injury, he can’t walk long distances or ride a bike. Living in a rural community, without access to transport, it makes it difficult to secure employment.
When Joel met his Job Coach, Kurumi, she explained to Joel how he can be using his university enrollment to help meet his monthly requirements, which would take some of the pressure away from his job searches and allow him to dedicate more time to his studies.
Joel is a qualified electrician. However, without a driver’s license he has not been able to secure work in this industry. Kurumi supported Joel to obtain his learners permit and atWork Australia were able to provide funding for Joel to complete driving lessons. While Joel was going through the process of securing his driver’s license, Kurumi encouraged him to undertake a micro-business course to further develop his skillset.
Joel has continued to take positive steps towards employment. With the support of his Job Coach, Kurumi, Joel has taken a courageous step into self-employment as an Electrician.
