From the Illawarra region in NSW, Patrick, 20, had no work experience but was eager to enter the workforce. Patrick has participated in work experience and PATH internships and was committed to finding a job.
Living with autism, Patrick was seeking an inclusive employer who will assist him with the correct type of training so he can learn to breakdown the complex instructions into one or two steps at a time.
Patrick joined atWork Australia and was introduced to his Job Coach, Michelle. They worked together on building Patrick’s resume, using this to enter the PATH internship program and find work experience opportunities. Patrick also worked with his Job Coach to familiarise himself with the interview process to build skill and confidence.
Patrick has found great support with Michelle, especially coping with the stresses and changes in routine due to Covid-19.
Once ready, Michelle and an atWork Australia Employer Consultant, Sharina, worked together to find the right opportunity.
Hong Kong Chef is a yum cha restaurant with a few locations around NSW who are connected with other Employer Consultants from atWork Australia. When the time came to find employees for the new Shellharbour location, owner, Jackson, reached out for help with his recruitment needs. Jackson has utilised the wage subsidies and uses atWork Australia as his main employment service provider. All of Jackson’s restaurants are very busy, thus meeting clients who have been pre-screened, are ready to work and come with a referral saves time and is a great support for the business.
Jackson said, “I like to employ people from [atWork Australia] because I like to see all people working with each other. I like helping them and to see them happy with their job. They also help and support my company a lot.”
Patrick was so proud to receive the text message with his first shifts, saying “I’m a man now and can help my mum with money.”
Michelle and Sharina have said, “all our clients who have started work at one of Jackson’s restaurants have given the best possible feedback. They feel supported, comfortable and they feel like they have buddies in the workplace. They have been given the hours that were promised and are being trained to ensure they are set up for success.”
Patrick has regularly attended appointments and participated in activities, making the most of his time with his Job Coach. Patrick said he “appreciated the support” Michelle provided.
