Brenden came to atWork Australia’s Georgetown, Tasmania, office to get tailored support from the Workforce Australia team on his employment journey. At 60–years-old, Brenden had been unemployed for the past three years and it was time to return to work.
Brenden is unable to obtain a driver’s licence; when living in a regional town, such as Georgetown, there is limited access to public transport, which creates additional barriers and limits Brenden’s employment options.
Brenden was introduced to his Job Coach, Isabel, and together they began brainstorming and searching for suitable employment in the local area. Brenden expressed an interest in gardening and landscaping. To support Brenden to secure work in this field, Isabel assisted Brenden to gain his Working With Children Check, so they could approach local schools to enquire about groundskeeper positions.
As an alternative option, and building on Brenden’s previous experience in traffic control, Isabel arranged an interview for Brenden to pursue and opportunity as a School Crossing Guard with State Growth.
Isabel helped Brenden prepare for the interview, working on various interview techniques and developing strong responses for general interview questions. Unfortunately, Brenden was not successful in the interview. Although, the experience gave him confidence and made him even more motivated to secure employment.
Isabel introduce Brenden to atWork Australia’s Employer Engagement Consultant, Brendan, who knew of a great opportunity with Programmed. The position was a temporary role with the Georgetown Council as a gardener with general labouring duties.
While this role was only temporary, Brenden was over the moon to have gained employment and be able to earn extra money just before Christmas.
The employer was extremely impressed with Brenden. Due to Brenden’s hard work, there is potential for further employment opportunities in the future.
Brenden’s confidence and motivation towards employment continues to grow. Brenden has been incredibly grateful for the support he has received from atWork Australia. His excitement and joy over finding employment is contagious.
Brenden has gained extra money for the festive season, a new reference for his resume, new skills and has the opportunity for ongoing work with this employer.
