23-year-old First Nations and Workforce Australia client, Billy, was connected to atWork Australia in Moolap for assistance to find employment.
He had limited work experience, and no work qualifications. He had some work experience as a labourer and from that, he knew that role wasn’t the right fit for him.
During his first appointment, his Job Coach, Emma referred Billy to our Jobs for the Mob program. A pre-employment program focused on goal setting, and job searching skills.
After participating in this course, Billy shared he had an interest in working in retail or customer service. He had a passion for surfing and wanted to work in a retail store that sold either surfboards, or surf clothing.
Emma encouraged Billy to enroll in a micro credential course aimed at providing him with retail qualifications and experience.
During this time, she also provided him with food and fuel vouchers, to support him while he searched for work.
Part of the course included a pop-up jam stall in the local shopping centre to provide valuable experience.
After completing the course, Billy was introduced to local employer engagement consultant, Kylie, who began approaching surf stores on his behalf.
Shortly he was offered a role as a customer service officer in a local surf store.
“The retail course provided Billy with a big boost in confidence. He felt like he was on the right path with his employment goals,” said Julie-Anne.
