Glenn was a panel beater by trade, however, due to his osteoarthritis throughout his body, was no longer able to keep up with the physical demands of the job.
From Shepparton, Victoria, Glenn, 59, was looking for a career change. His brother has cerebral palsy and was the motivation for Glenn to study his Certificate IV in Disability to gain employment as a support worker and give back to the community.
When Glenn was introduced to his Job Coach, Brad, he mentioned his eagerness to change career; so, Brad started implementing a strategy to get Glenn to reaching his goals.
Thus, Brad discussed with Glenn how the online platform, Positivum, would help him by giving him the tools to start thinking more positively, set goals and help with stress and pain management. Glenn was eager to start the program and he really believed it would help with his current mindset, study and moving forward into employment.
Glenn said he had learnt in the Positivum course that he “needs to make goals and directions in life and work towards them”. Glenn also learnt the “importance to recognise life’s rewards and appreciate them”. Glenn said that he would highly recommend the course to the younger generation who are entering the workplace.
Positivum helped Glenn by teaching how to pace his study and pick the optimum time to engage with the work; times when there would be less disruptions. Positivum has given Glenn motivation, confidence and direction; in setting goals and in life.
Glenn said, “Brad is easy to approach and chat with; he is really easy to open up to”.
Glenn believes that his age and physical condition were barriers to finding employment. However, as he has almost finished his Certificate IV in Disability, he is excited to gain experience during his placements as a support worker and feels optimistic about finding employment in his new role.
Glenn said, “in today’s modern, fast paced and demanding working environments, it pays to maintain a good and honest evaluation of your coping mechanisms” and Positivum has really helped set a balance.
Brad said, “Glenn has been inspiring to work with and to learn about his life… Glenn is passionate about wanting to make a change in other people’s lives as well as his own. I look forward to seeing him in the next chapter of his life as a support worker”.
