Sivameena came to atWork Australia with experience working for the family business in an Administration role, her first job in Australia after arriving here from India in 2016. Sivameena joined the Disability Employment Services program as she was struggling to find work due to another challenge she was facing in life, fighting Bowel Cancer. Sivameena found potential employers were concerned about her stability in a role, resulting in her being without work for two years.
This didn’t deter Sivameena though, she wanted work and brought with her a very positive outlook on life and a belief that she could be an asset to an organisation if given the opportunity.
Working with Sivameena’s positivity and eagerness to find work, her atWork Australia Job Coach Eken acted quickly, and soon after meeting, Sivameena and Eken were meeting two to three times per week with the aim of finding Sivameena work immediately. “I have seen from experience how being unemployed for a prolonged period of time can take a negative turn, causing the individual to withdraw and develop other symptoms which may be difficult to overcome at a later stage,” Eken said. Eken wanted to help Sivameena find work that would give her back her purpose and focus, whilst she continued to fight for her health.
Soon after, a role caught Eken and Sivameena’s eye, an Administration Assistant role with a local boutique real estate agency. The role was to focus on special projects, assisting the business with their growth and expansion in the Western Suburbs of Sydney. Sivameena interviewed well and was offered the position (starting her new job just three weeks after she first met her Job Coach Eken), to which she was ecstatic and grateful for the opportunity at this time of her life, “It couldn’t have happened at a much more needed time in my life,” Sivameena said.
Sivameena’s employers are very happy with their new team member too, “Sivameena is a quick learner and has applied a professional approach to her work tasks. She is a pleasure to work with and I believe she will be a great asset to our growing business,” Joseph, Sivameena’s employer, said.
Sivameena’s journey can be described as one of determination and courage – from arriving into a new country, then being diagnosed with a life-threatening disease, whilst still holding a positive outlook on life and actively seeking, and finding work.
